Artificial Intelligence (AI): Friendly Or Frightening?

The idea of Artificial Intelligence has generated several opinions around the world in recent times. While many are optimistic about the solutions it would provide, others have frowned at the disruption it could create without realizing that Artificial intelligence has been around for a long time. The idea behind AI is to free humans from repetitive tasks and reduce errors.

The development and deployment of AI has continued to grow in developed countries. In London for instance, there are self-driving robots that deliver orders, China has begun testing a driverless and a trackless train that navigates the city by lines painted on the road. Artificial Intelligence is everywhere, and every business that wants to stay competitive needs to adopt the extra level of intelligence and smartness AI brings.

AI comes with the extra assistance to humans. For instance, an AI CCTV surveillance system can detect an intruder and immediately send a security alert to a mobile phone or trigger an alarm which will take a longer time for a human to monitor the situation and make the call. AI also helps in achieving better research outcomes through improved prediction, which can include medical diagnosis, oil explorations, etc.

However, one of the drawbacks of AI is the fact that the deployment of the technology may lead to severe unemployment, unless if humans can fix the unemployment with jobs AI cannot do. A clear example is AI powered driverless cars, which will displace millions of human drivers.  In addition, humans will get too dependent on Artificial Intelligence and lose their mental capacities. This is evident with the use of smartphones and other technologies.

There is no competition between machines and humans; just as Artificial intelligence play a part in preventing human errors so does AI need human oversight to prevent its own errors.
